mysql error message - max_allowed_packet

Hi folks,
I’m getting this error message with Drupal6 – Got a packet bigger than ‘max_allowed_packet’ bytes query:.

The docs say the default is 1MB and research suggests I raise it to 8-18mb.

Question is how??
