The “MediaWiki stack” idea is excellent. I have only very limited knowledge about linux, but I suppose this stack installation might be easy! Exactly what I have been looking for!

Do you know whether your stack installation is compatible with: http://en.opensuse.org/

Is it possible to later add TeX support to my MediaWiki installation? (supports mathematical formulas like in Wikipedia)—unfortunately, essential for me)

A commercial “rentable virtual server” product would be compatible with MediaWiki stack if MySQL 4 and SSH admin login is available?

If the virtual server would come with an apache server running—would that interfere?

Would you offer individual support if there are any problems with the installation?

Is the MediaWiki stack completely free? Any adverts or traps? :-)

Cheers,
Kajjo

Hi Kajjo,

The installation should be compatible with open suse. We are not familiar with the steps necessary to add TeX support, but it should be possible to do so.

I am unsure what you are exactly asking for. You plan to install MediaWiki stack in a server that you rent from a third party? In principle it should be possible. Regarding Apache, it will work, but if you want to use the default port (80) you may need to disable that pre-existing server, which is probably a good idea as virtual servers tend to come with memory restrictions.

You will need to use the forums for now. Offering personalized support is something that may happen in the future, but it is not something we can do right now.

Yes, there is no catch. Well one, if you get to ever meet one of us at a conference or somewhere you get to buy as a beer :) In the future we may be able to offer additional services, when individuals or companies require specific services such as customization or support, but in any case they will be completely optional. Or goal is to get as many people using open source apps as possible.

Just another thought:

How easy is it to install updates, bug fixes patches to the components included in your stack?

Will you offer stacked updates inthe future?

Will the standard patches of apache, mediawiki or php be compatible?

Hi Kajjo,

You can update the application without problems following the application instructions. To update PHP you can install the new BitNami Stack and restore your database. We will update the Stacks when it appears a new version of any application or when it releases a new version of PHP or Apache that fixed any security issue as soon as possible. Besides, we will work to create upgrade installers in the future :)
