I’m trying to add a virtual host so I can use my own domain rather then the default EC2 domain.
However the /opt/bitnami/apache2/conf/extra directory and the files in it are restricted to root access so I can’t edit the httpd-vhosts.conf file. I ssh in as bitnami

Hi,

You can try to edit the file using “sudo”. For instance:

$ sudo vi /opt/bitnami/apache2/conf/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf

If you want to edit as a bitnami user you can change the permissions:

$ sudo chown bitnami:daemon /opt/bitnami/apache2/conf/extra/*

You can find more info about vhost at http://wiki.bitnami.com/Components/Apache I hope it helps.

Thanks for your help. I chowned the directory and then edited the file successfully. I then reset the amazon instance but now I cannot ssh back onto the server! It just times out when I try. I have also rebooted the server but I still can’t connect.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Ignore me, I realised the ip address changed! I’m new to this!
