Bitnami on RightScale™ Beginner's Guide

We have moved another step forward in our quest to simplify the deployment of open source server apps - we've taken them to the cloud. We're glad to announce the availability of Bitnami instances on RightScale By combining RightScale's automated cloud computing management with Bitnami's automated application deployment, you can have any Bitnami-powered application running on your very own server in literally a matter of minutes.

The process is very simple: sign up for RightScale (its free!), select the applications you want to run, press the 'launch' button and voila, a few minutes later you will be enjoying Joomla!, Drupal, Mantis, Redmine and many other apps . Rightscale offers 10 hours of Amazon EC2 for free, so you can experiment with the system. After that, you can simply link the account to your Amazon EC2 credentials.

The following is a detailed, step-by-step guide. You can click on any image to bring up a full-size screen capture.

The first step is to create a new account on RightScale. Visit RightScale and sign up for free.

Select option #2 and get the complimentary 10 hours of Amazon EC2 or select option #1 and enter your AWS credentials in order to test Bitnami on RightScale for free.

Finish the registration by clicking 'Create My Free Trial Account'.

After some configuration takes place in the background and you confirm the mail you will receive, you can access your dashboard

Once you have registered and logged in, you can create a new server using a Bitnami template. On the left menu, click 'Design' and then 'ServerTemplates'. Click in the 'Partners' tab and you will see the templates.

Use Bitnami LAMPStack as an example. This template allows you to optionally install extra applications such as Drupal, Joomla!, Mediawiki or WordPress. Click on the green arrow next to it and you will be prompted with a new dialog. You can leave the default values and click 'Launch'.

You're almost there. Now we have to pass the desired parameters to the setup installer. As you can see, you can decide to optionally install several PHP-based open source applications. You will also need to provide additional information, such as a login id or email address that will be used while setting up the applications. Once completed, click 'Launch' again.

Congratulations! Your server is fully configured. You will need to wait a bit here, as the new machine has to boot, download the packages and install them. Although it varies, the whole process should take less than 10 minutes. You can click on 'Manage -> Servers -> Active servers' to see the status of the new machine.

Once done, you will be able to see more information about the machine, including its web address.

Click on the link to the machine and there you are, Bitnami LAMPStack and the modules you selected are already installed and ready to go.

Currently, there are templates for all the Bitnami PHP apps, Trac, Redmine, Django and Tracks, but we are working to bring even more apps to the platform. Sign up to our newsletter to keep up to date with the latest Bitnami news.
