Moodle is a very popular open source learning management solution (LMS) for the delivery of elearning courses and programs. It’s used not only by universities, but also by hundreds of corporations around the world who provide eLearning education for their employees. Moodle features a simple interface, drag-and-drop features, role-based permissions, deep reporting, many language translations, a well-documented API and more. More on Moodle

Moodle offers students and instructors a personalized dashboard listing courses and tasks, and collaborative tools including forums, wikis and group calendars. It lets you work with files stored in cloud services like Dropbox, and supports notifications and private messaging between users. It is available for multiple languages, supports open standards like Learning Tool Interoperability (LTI) and Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM), and works well with screen readers. Finally, it comes with an extensive plugins directory together with support from more than 60 worldwide partners.

Launch on more than a Single VM using Moodle Multi-Tier

Bitnami offers a multi-tier Moodle configuration that puts the application and database on multiple virtual machines. This provides improved capacity over a single VM and separates the database contents from the machine where the application code is running.

On Microsoft Azure, you can launch this configuration into your account using the Microsoft Azure Marketplace.

Key features of Moodle include

  • Build courses and add content to them.
  • Create student assignments, tests and quizzes.
  • View student submissions and track progress.
  • Add course deadlines to the shared calendar.
  • Generate reports on student participation.
  • Define workflows for grading assignments and working with other instructors.

One of the most versatile LMS systems out there

    by Nadav Kavalerchik on

While the system comes fully packed with all that you need to run a campus (from a small K12 school to a large academic institute) one of its strong feature is the ability to extend it with many hundreds of plugins. and since it is open sourced, you can always tweak it to your specific need (which I did!)

    Stopped working

    by Annette Knobloch on

Several months ago, or more, Bitnami Moodle stopped working. What changed? It was a nice resource, while it lasted. It would be helpful to have some kind of screen message if it is a matter of having to renew, or subscribe for a fee.

Ease of exprimentation with birnami moodle and AWS

    by Achintya Bakre on

I work with NGO in child education and really constrained on resources. We wanted to create online courses for our tribal audience. It was only possible due to Bitnami and AWS free tier instance, we could build it without any cost. Now we are in position to showcase and raise some support. Also the ease of operating it, very stable access and support made it very easy.
