More on Moodle

Moodle offers students and instructors a personalized dashboard listing courses and tasks, and collaborative tools including forums, wikis and group calendars. It lets you work with files stored in cloud services like Dropbox, and supports notifications and private messaging between users. It is available for multiple languages, supports open standards like Learning Tool Interoperability (LTI) and Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM), and works well with screen readers. Finally, it comes with an extensive plugins directory together with support from more than 60 worldwide partners.

Launch on more than a Single VM using Moodle Multi-Tier

Bitnami offers a multi-tier Moodle configuration that puts the application and database on multiple virtual machines. This provides improved capacity over a single VM and separates the database contents from the machine where the application code is running.

On Microsoft Azure, you can launch this configuration into your account using the Microsoft Azure Marketplace.

Key features of Moodle include

  • Build courses and add content to them.
  • Create student assignments, tests and quizzes.
  • View student submissions and track progress.
  • Add course deadlines to the shared calendar.
  • Generate reports on student participation.
  • Define workflows for grading assignments and working with other instructors.

    Using Moodle

    by Ross Woods on

Moodle has a good range of features and certainly compares well with its competitors on that basis. Most of them are very easy to use. But for something so good, it can be very frustrating and nobody seems very interested in fixing its obvious shortcomings: difficult to install and upgrade, lessons feature (one of its most powerful features) is clunky and difficult, bloated and slow when lots of students are online, hard to set up groups and relate to an external student database, etc, etc.

    Bitnami MOODLE and Amazon EC2

    by Nicola Armenise on

Excellent, I'm using the Virtual Machine version of Bitnami MOODLE since about 40 days under the free tier of AWS at no cost for 12 months, with 70 students enrolled in my courses. The response times are quite impressive, too: thanks a lot to the .Bitnami&Amazon alliance!

If I could rate -10 stars I would.

Moodle has many problems and schools don't know how to make a good system for their students to use which makes the experience horrible.

    Moodle is great.. if

    by Chatter User on

Moodle, while it is a good idea.. it is not a good teachers resource.. Teachers who have been brought up on either no technology or window/mac technology do not need to then have to take programming classes in order to use free software. Schools get Microsoft licensing for next to nothing and really should look into sharepoint as a solution, as it will integrate with other Microsoft office applications, and will allow teachers who already know how to use Powerpoint, and other MS applications an easy transition.

Instead, moodle now requires you teach all your teachers a new technology that is difficult for most tech savvy people let alone those who are not tech savvy.. to learn.. Honestly this is a cool idea, for those who are in the IT field, but schools really have no reason to be using this..
